Contestants from around the world are gathering in the US state of Nevada for the 2003 World Beard and Moustache Championships.
Entrants will be judged in seventeen categories, with the coveted top prize going to the overall finest example of extraordinary facial hair.
The event, which is held every two years, is supported by beard and moustache clubs in at least nine different countries.
The current world title is held by German Willi Chevalier, who stormed to victory in the 2001 contest with his resplendent freestyle beard, resembling a hairy squid.
